Fitness for the Type A Personality
Let’s get one thing perfectly clear from the start--this article is not for couch potatoes! We’re talking about Type A personalities. You know the type. Their mantra is "What’s worth doing is worth overdoing.
Happy Trails
When you’re in the great outdoors, allergies, the sun and bugs can all put a damper on your fun. No matter how careful you are, accidents happen. That’s why everyone needs a first aid kit.
Bites and Scratches
Scratches from animals are not usually serious unless an infection ensues or the *wound is deep. Cat scratches can cause an illness called cat-scratch fever, an infection that inflames the wound and causes typical *flu-like symptoms within about two weeks of the scratch.
Bone Fractures
A fracture can occur in any bone in the body, including the vertebrae or the ribs, although it is most common in the extremities. Broken bones are called simple fractures when the skin is intact and compound fractures when the skin is broken.
Burns
Even the most superficial burns can be very tender, but they are neither serious nor do they inflict lasting scar.
Gangrene
Gangrene occurs when tissues are destroyed and deteriorate over a large area. In dry gangrene, the dead and dying tissue turns black. The first sign of gangrene is *pain, and the skin becomes cold and pale. As the tissues die, the pain turns to numbness and the skin color darkens..
Jellyfish Sting
A jellyfish sting, like a *snake bite, affects the body internally and externally. Local injury includes *pain, *itching or swelling with the sting, as well as redness, *rash or numbing sensation. The numbness can be quite serious, depending on the size of the sting.
Muscle Weakness
Unused muscles due to injury or *convalescence will not only lose strength, but their shape and weight fairly quickly. Muscle weakness often accompanies exhaustion experienced during the flu or with *chronic fatigue syndrome.
Poisoning
Symptoms of poisoning vary considerably depending on the substance. Swallowing corrosive substances found in drain and toilet cleaners causes severe *burns in the throat and esophagus. If the substance was strong enough and the amount substantial, shock can develop quickly.
Snake Bite
Many people who live in cities in Canada and the United States are never confronted with the potential danger of bites from venomous snakes. Not all snakes are poisonous and, of those that are, not all cause severe sickness.
Whiplash
Whiplash causes painful muscle stiffness in the neck. The tense muscles can pinch nerves and cause numbness, burning and tingling in the arms and fingers. In severe cases, whiplash can lead to weakness and paralysis of the arm muscles.
Wounds and Cuts
Special care should be taken with deep cuts and puncture wounds, which are more susceptible to infection since they do not always bleed or allow oxygen to enter and eliminate infectio.
